It’s nights like this when the snow is falling outside and I get lucky enough to be away from my family for a break. My work needs me on my shift s I get to spend time in a room by myself. It’s quality “me” time that I occasionally get to take advantage of. One of my favorite things to do is just hide away from everyone. This means I make good use of the in-room amenities and treat myself to several cups of coffee in the quiet of my own space.

This model coffeemaker from Waring by Cuisinart is the standard for many hotels across the country. It’s a 4-cup machine designed for commercial use.

The coffeemaker is made mostly of heavy plastic. Picking it up and opening the compartments, everything feels heavy. These have been fairly durable in our experience and we haven’t had to replace very many over the year and a half we’ve been open. The lid of the compartment for the ground coffee and water pops up nicely an snaps back into place without feeling flimsy.

If there’s one downside its that the carafe is glass. This is where we tend to lose the machines as people let their kids play with them or just end up knocking the carafe off of the counter. For safety, there’s an automatic shutoff that prevents the carafe from getting burned.

We have the packs of grounds that get placed in the basket to make coffee. It’s been my experience that I end up with pretty weak coffee using these, so I usually use one pack to make three cups of coffee, not four. If you have the ability to use a filter and put the amount of coffee in here that suits you, I think you’ll be happy. This makes a nice, hot cup of coffee and it’s the fault of those that package the ground coffee that it ends up weak, not the coffeemaker.

The size fits nicely on the countertop. I could easily see having one of these in my home and using it to make a few cups of coffee at a time so I get to drink nice fresh coffee, rather than reheating what was left over from the morning since I am on a different schedule than anyone else. It’s not so big that it dominates anywhere it’s placed, but is a small appliance that sits in the background.

Cleaning it is easy. The plastic housing wipes off with a damp cloth. The carafe cleans with soap and water. Both the carafe and the basket are dishwasher safe.

Four of these come in a case, so it’s not designed for individual purchase. However, if you have an opportunity to purchase one at what is called a salvage sale, you won’t be disappointed. These are very durable and a great way for people who don’t need full pots of coffee to have fresh coffee every day.
