The Mr. Coffee URX33 12 cup coffee maker may well be the worst coffee maker I have ever owned. I originally purchased this unit because of the stylish looks and wide range of features. It has a 12-cup removable water reservoir, which makes filling and cleaning very convenient. The temperature of the warming plate can be adjusted, and there is also a “small batch” setting to provide better flavor when brewing only 1-4 cups. The coffeemaker also has an auto shutoff feature which turns off the warming plate after two hours, and an indicator to alert you when the unit needs cleaning.
Unfortunately, it fails miserably in the most important area: actually making coffee.
About half of all pots of coffee I have brewed in this unit wind up on the counter and floor. Yes, I am aware of the absolute necessity of positioning the coffee pot correctly (should have been a warning to me right there), but even when the carafe is positioned properly the basket will still overflow.
The problem seems to be with the mechanism used to provide the “pause and serve” feature. This mechanism closes the drain hole at the bottom of the basket, and seems to like to stay closed at random times. This results in no coffee actually being dispensed into the carafe, but rather all over the unit, counter and floor. I would love to chalk this up to a defective machine, but this is now my THIRD new unit, and I keep having the same problem. I would like to note that I have used just about every filter available, including Mr. Coffee paper filters and their permanent “gold” filter- same results.
It is infuriating to me that a $50.00 coffee maker from a company such as Mr. Coffee should perform so terribly, when my 12-year-old Norelco coffee maker is still going strong, and has once again found itself in the place of honor on my counter while I pack up the URX33 to once again, and for the final time, return it to the store.
As far as the Mr. Coffee URX33 goes, looks, without a doubt, are not everything.
