This makes good tasting coffee, but I wish it was made better. I have been through two so far. The first unit last only a month before the pot burned since the automatic shut-off stopped working. I had to mail it back to Bodum to get a new one. I used the replacement daily for two months and now it no longer turns on. I already paid $15 in shipping to receive the first one and $10 to ship it back. And I bought the first one for $100, so this is becoming a very costly exercise in frustration.

The whole machine is made of plastic which does not tough enough to hold up to the hot temperatures and daily use for very long. Also the electronics appear to be cheap and faulty. Before it broke the second time the machine would click off and on and sometimes the coffee would be too hot to drink out of the pot. The base has tiny rubber buttons which are hard to press and the timer is very hard to read.

I also found all parts of the coffee maker to be very hard to clean. You cannot simply throw away the filter with the grounds like a drip coffee maker. You have to scrape the grounds from the top unit with a spatula and then wash the filter, and the top unit (the funnel is very hard to get completely clean, unless you rinse it for a very long time with very hot water) and then the spatula! And you are not finished. There is still the pot which you’ll need a cleaning brush to get inside the narrow opening. And it is hard to clean without running water (the manual says not put the pot in the dishwater, submerse it or rinse it under running-water). The electronics are in the bottom of the pot which worries me. There is a hole for water to drain out if you do get water inside the bottom.

It does make good tasting French Press coffee and lots of it at once. It does look very cool and impresses the guests. However I don’t think it is worth the trouble. It is not very well made and I no longer trust its safety. From reading other reviews of this on other sites, this maker will last no longer than a year if you use it ever day. Maybe if you only use this on weekends or dinner parties it might be ok — but it is an expensive coffee maker for such infrequent use. I’m going to return my second broken Santos and get something else instead (they offer a warranty for 2 years but you can only exchange it for other product(s) and not for a refund).
