During the school year, my days start early. Extremely early. Alarm goes off at 4:30am early. It takes a lot of motivation to get moving at that hour. It takes some serious effort to get out the door on time. And it takes an incredible amount of patience to listen to complaining teenagers who don’t want to hear about cells, genetics, and bacteria. Fortunately, I have the Black & Decker Cafe Noir 10-Cup Coffee Maker to get me through my morning.

Using This Coffee Maker

It is very easy to set up and use this machine. The pot and the water tank both have markings on them to help you quickly add the appropriate amount of water for your desired number of cups of coffee. I tend to fill the pot and then pour the water into the tank while my boyfriend adds water directly using the hose at the sink. Both ways work. When you open the lid of the Black & Decker Cafe Noir 10-Cup Coffee Maker, you can access the filter basket. It has a slot-locking system to ensure that it is in the proper position. You just place a disposable paper filter into the basket, add your desired amount of coffee, close the lid, and press “on”. Your coffee is ready in minutes. You can even set up the machine the night before and program it to begin brewing coffee at a specific time. Honestly, I forget to do that about 99% of the time and just make it when I get up each morning.

Sneak-A-What?

Before I’ve had my coffee I tend to be impatient and hate having to wait for… my coffee. This coffee maker has a nice feature called “Sneak-A-Cup” that allows you to remove the pot and pour yourself some coffee while it is still being brewed. The machine continues to make your coffee but it temporarily interrupts the flow down while you remove the pot to “sneak” your cup. When you return the pot back into position, the flow of coffee resumes.

You Won’t Burn Your House Down Either

This coffee maker has a warming plate under the pot that will continue to keep its contents hot for two hours, at which point the machine automatically turns itself off. If you are not finished with the coffee at that time, you can just press the “on” button and it will continue heating the pot for another two hours. I love the fact that this product has an automatic shut-off. There have been literally hundreds of times that I’ve rushed out the door, driven several miles to work and then realized that I had forgotten to turn off the coffee maker.

Cleaning Your Coffee Maker

The filter basket, coffee pot, and lid are dishwasher safe (top rack). I have cleaned all three pieces many times in the dishwasher with excellent results. The problem that I have had involves the coffee pot and lid. After separating the lid from the pot a couple dozen times, it was almost impossible to reattach it because the plastic pieces that hold the lid were twisted and worn away. My boyfriend used pliers to get the lid back into place and told me to never ever remove the lid again. So now I hand-wash the coffee pot and lid–not as convenient as putting them into the dishwasher but it still is very easy to do.

No One Needs A Mess First Thing In The Morning

Aside from the whole lid-attachment issue, there is one other little thing that you need to watch out for. When you place the filter basket into the top of the machine, it is very important that you align the tabs so that it falls into place and that you then turn the basket to make sure it is locked in. It is important that the filter basket is secured into place because that is what allows the coffee to flow into the pot. I have had coffee disasters on more than one occasion because the basket wasn’t locked in–this causes the “Sneak-A-Cup” function to kick in and the coffee does not flow down directly into the pot. It pools and backs up in the filter basket until it overflows and runs down the sides and into the pot (and onto the counter), taking coffee grinds along with it. It’s a big disgusting mess that you don’t want to have to deal with first thing in the morning. Just make sure the basket is in place before you press the “on” button.

Two Weeks of Starbucks or Two Years of Homemade?

We paid $30 for our Black and Decker Cafe Noir 10-Cup Coffee Maker at Kohl’s. It’s been working well for over two years so I think we’ve gotten more than our money’s worth out of it.

Overall

I have been very pleased with this coffee maker. It has a couple of handy features but no complicated bells and whistles. It’s easy to use, somewhat easy to clean, and very affordable. Most importantly, the Black and Decker Cafe Noir 10-Cup Coffee Maker delivers those much-needed blasts of caffeine that help me to make it through my morning without losing my patience or focus. No homework? No lecture from me… at least today.
