I loved the idea of a fresh cup of coffee each time, so as soon as I heard about this new “coffee pod” concept I rushed out to the nearest department store to get one. I had a choice between Black and Decker or Senseo, and after reading both boxes, decided on the B & D for three reasons: I figured with a name like Black & Decker on it, it had to be quality. I didn’t think I’d like the “foam” on the coffee advertised by the Senseo machine, and thirdly, the B & D was a little cheaper.

I got it home and washed it, and while doing so was a little surprised at the quality (or lack thereof) of the unit. It seemed like a very cheap, flimsy appliance rather than the sturdy one I had expected. However, I excitedly plugged it in and turned it on and placed a pod in the pod holder, and found it was rather difficult to “lock” the lid. It seemed like I was forcing it shut, and not being high quality to begin with, that scared me. It made a decent cup of coffee, though, so I was excited about that.

I continued to use it 3-4 times a day for a couple of weeks, until the time I smelled a horrible smell coming from it. From somewhere within the unit it was smoking and burning plastic, and the entire house stunk very badly. I unplugged it and walked it outside.

I wrote to customer service via the internet, and after a couple of days they got back to me. Back and forth with item details, serial number, etc. and then they finally told me to pack it up, ship it back, and they’d send another one. I explained that I really didn’t want to wait that long, and asked if they’d ship one immediately and I’d use the packaging to return the defective one, and they agreed. About 10 days later a new one arrived, but an e-mail told me not to send back the old one till they sent me a return authorization number. They never did. I sent a reminder a few weeks later - heard nothing. I ended up throwing out the defective machine after 6 months, not needing to have a broken unit cluttering up the house any longer.

The second one’s pod lid closed a LITTLE easier than the first one, but it was still an uncomfortable struggle, feeling like I was stressing it. That machine lasted about 3 months, and then stopped working. I didn’t bother contacting customer service …. I did not WANT another Home Cafe.

I went out and bought a Senseo, and LOVE it.
