Regardless of what some coffee snobs may say, this machine is well worth the price.

First, and foremost, this machine uses the SAME italian made “ULKA” pump that are used in many expensive home espresso machines. I have a Briel Portofino and a Saeco Via Veneto, in addition to this machine. They all have ULKA pumps. I’ve opened them all up myself to see.

The machine is quiet when the pump turns on and the thermostat (as indicated by light on switch) doesn’t cycle excessively, indicating a larger, sufficiently sized boiler, which is good for maintaing the right temperature and producing adequate steam. The Saeco Via Veneto, on the other hand, seems to have a small, undersized boiler because the light turns off within seconds of the pump running (meaning it needs to heat up again). And the Saeco is a lot louder.

The solid, heavy construction of this machine is far superior to the flimsy plastic housing of other, more expensive machines (including the Briel and Saeco machines I have).

Two Downsides:

1- The design of the filter holder is not conducive to making a good crema. Although the espresso tastes very good the lack of a good crema detracts from the quality of the experience. BTW the Saeci Via Veneto uses a pressurized filter holder which produces a VERY rich crema, although the espresso taste is not necessarily that much better.

2- The size of the water reservoir on this machine is too small.

With heavy consideration of the price of this machine, I highly recommend it. Of course, good espresso comes from good coffee so don’t chintz out in that department. Slap a “Signore Caffe” sticker over the uncool “Mr. Coffee” logo on this machine and enjoy all the money you saved.
