My husband and I were in the market for a coffee/tea pod system since my husband is the only one in our family that likes coffee and we were wasting a lot of coffee brewing a whole pot just for him or he would go to work and buy a $5 cup of coffee everyday. We really hadn’t paid much attention to the quality or features of units out on the market until diving into some research. There are quite a few less expensive models (Black & Decker, Melitta, Senseo, etc.) available via mass retailers - from what I have read from reviews, most people are somewhat content with these but have troubles with the units breaking. It wasn’t until I read reviews of the Personal myCafe that I realized its value over the others. I decided to purchase one after deciding the quality and features of it were worth the expensive price tag (~$200), and that I could get excellent speedy customer service if needed from . This unit is a commercial unit - so it’s made very well, designed very thoughtfully and brews at a much higher temperature than other units, thus providing better quality coffee/tea. It actually extends the amount of coffee/tea you can get out of a pod/tea bag as most pods will say they are good for 8 oz.; we have found that we can get 14 oz. and more out of them with the coffee still being very strong. It does tea wonderfully - I just use regular tea bags and find that I can get many cups of tea out of one bag, or if I’m brewing tea for the family, I can use the family sized tea bags and brew a pitcher of tea very quickly. This unit has a coffee option as well as a tea option - the difference is that the tea option actually pulsates the water, so tea brews correctly for this short period of time (maybe 10 - 20 seconds of brew/dispense time). You can use the tea option with coffee pods to brew stronger coffee. The Personal myCafe is a compact unit - it’s slightly smaller than our old conventional .

One of the biggest features that attracted to me to this unit was its ability to increment the number of ounces from 4 - 12 ounces in one ounce increments. This is a bigger deal than you might initially think! Our cups are various sizes, sometimes you want more or less, sometimes you want to use it for other things than coffee/tea. Since it has a 46 oz. water reservoir on the back of the unit, you can use this for several cups of coffee/tea in the morning and even for your instant oatmeal, soups….anything that needs hot water. I’ve even used it to supply near boiling hot water for recipes I cook on the stove to speed things up since it heats water to 200 degrees in seconds! The large reservoir makes it easy to use since you can get quite a few uses out of it without having to fill it back up. Another important feature I was looking for was the available height underneath the spout to the base for a travel mug or tall coffee mug - this unit has a 7 inch clearance and our travel mugs fit perfectly underneath it. It comes with two interchangeable pod holders that can be used to prevent flavor transfer when you switch between different coffees or teas - I haven’t found that it transfers the flavor if you use one holder as directed (rinsing it out in between uses) but it’s nice to have a spare in case you want to run one through the dishwasher. The brew cancel button is also nice in case you forget your using an 8 oz. cup while dispensing and selected to brew 12 oz…..it stops immediately.

A big plus for this model is its ability for the heavy use pieces to be washed in the dishwasher. The base has a removable plastic tray, the stainless grill at the bottom, the water reservoir and the pod holders (there are two interchangeable with this unit) all conveniently remove and can be washed in the dishwasher. This unit also features an energy-saver mode (kicks on after 6 hours of idle time) which reduces the tank temperature - I have found that this causes only a minor delay (maybe 20 seconds) if I come home from work and want a cup of tea….I still get it in less than a minute even with the energy mode. I find this feature to be great because we don’t have to worry about powering the unit down before we leave. It also has a sleep mode where it will power down after 2 weeks automatically if it has been idle. I was initially concerned about the water reservoir on the back of the unit being too hot to the touch (in case someone bumped it) however the water in the reservoir is lukewarm at best. I’m not sure how does it, but the water goes from this lukewarm temperature to 200 degrees within 20 seconds (the time it takes to get a cup of coffee).

We use this unit for so much more than coffee/tea although it was worth it just for that since it does such a great job. I have used this for soups, instant oatmeal, cooking, etc. Perhaps the only drawback to this unit is that the tea option pulsates the water as it dispenses intermittently which can cause a few stray splashes on your countertop depending on the size of your cup (if it’s taller it doesn’t do this, if you use a small tea cup, it will). Overall, we are extremely pleased with this unit and cannot recommend it enough.
