The BEST gets Better Nespresso D290 Espresso Machine

A real no brainer. Nespresso D290 Espresso Machine I purchased a Breville 800ESXL for my girlfriend. It lasted just one day in our home. I'm not saying it was a bad ...

Great Machine Nespresso D290 Espresso Machine For those of you considering the traditional espresso machine vs. Nespresso's patented "pods" of coffee-- go with ...

Several years ago, I offered a review on my first machine. That unit was based on the engine that was once the standard for good espresso in a manual or semi-. Since then has introduced several new models including the Concept Machine, the D290, and the Romeo. I recently purchased the D290 because it offers most of the features of the Romeo, but has a smaller footprint and seems a bit more durable.

I continue to maintain that makes the best espresso beans available. My favorites are Ristretto and Volluto (a bean which describes as being “reproducible”). The coffee is never bitter; it is full of rich flavor, and has a great crema. At only $.49 per cup, the coffee is reasonable, and customer service at the Club is on par with the service one might expect at Williams-Sonoma, where I bought the machine.

Improvements in the D290 over my old unit include:

1. Easier to fill water vessel. The new vessel is round, holds 40 oz. of water, and fits very easily into the unit. One cannot miss.

2. Automatic pod disposal system. The system ejects the pods into a container that is emptied every eight cups or so. A light comes on to tell you when it needs to be done. This reduces the twisting and turning that looks more authentic but is more trouble than it is worth.

3. Hotter coffee. Yes, this unit makes a nice hot espresso. It’s not coffee. It should not be 192 degrees on the palate, but at 160, it is hotter than the Capresso Z5 that a friend of mine paid $3200.00 for. (The Z5 is a super machine… if I could afford one, I’d have one, but for my purposes, I have the best.)

4. Better crema. The crema produced is rich and thick, better than on any other unit. The process, requiring 19 bars of pressure, more than any other unit on the market, yields this added, delicious, benefit.

5. Automatic frothing unit. Though it’s not quite as good as a professional might make, the froth is delicious and easy. Simply put the hose into a pitcher of milk, and the unit produces the hot froth in a cup. BEWARE: there is some splash when this is done. Still, it is much better than manual frothing.
