This review pertains to the C1300 which is almost identical to the C1500. Jura / Capresso C1500 Espresso Machine & Coffee Maker I have owned a number of espresso machines including Gaggia pump driven manual units, an Acquaviva commercial supe...

About 2 years ago I went to a friend’s house and saw his super-automatic coffee maker in the kitchen. I was so impressed with how it made coffee I just had to have one…until he told me how much they cost. I have to admit that I struggled with the idea of spending almost $1000 on a coffee maker. But now, more than a year and a half later I am still SOOOOOOOO happy I decided to buy it.

I read a lot of customer reviews and a lot of sales propaganda about a lot of different super-automatic coffee makers. In the end there were 3 things that made me decide on the Jura-Capresso C1300:

1. Overall customer satisfaction with Capresso products. I have had absolutely NO problems with this machine since I bought it. There is a potential problem with all super-automatics, but it is easily avoidable (I’ll cover that later).

2. Simplicity. Some super-automatics are so complicated that you need an engineering degree just to figure out how to work them. I saw several with as many as 27 different settings for coffee strength, grind, quantity, etc. The C1300 has 3 strength settings (Regular, Strong, and Extra Strong), and you can adjust it in half ounce intervals from 1 oz up to two 7.5 oz cups of coffee per brew. You can also adjust the fineness of the grind, but that’s not really a setting I play with too much (this has to do with the potential problem I mentioned earlier).

3. Ease of use and maintenance. You pour water in one side, whole coffee beans in the other, and press a button and it grinds the beans, brews the coffee and dumps the used grounds into a disposal tray. The LCD screen tells you when to add water, when to add beans, when to empty the tray, when to clean the unit and when to change the water filter. And changing the tray (to discard of used grounds) is super easy. It only takes a couple of minutes and there are no small parts to lose or complicated pieces to re-assemble.

Now, about the potential problem- All super-automatic coffee makers grind the beans prior to brewing, and therefore all will have the potential over time to get clogged up as the machine passes the ground coffee into the brewing chamber. The most common cause for this is grinding the coffee too fine. If the coffee is ground into a super fine powder every time, eventually it will get clogged up and need to be cleaned (which means paying someone else to do it). I set mine right in the middle of the range and it makes excellent coffee – whether it is a shot of extra-strong espresso or a 7.5 ox cup of crema cafĂ©- and I have had no problems.

You can also set it to the “pre-ground” setting and scoop pre-ground coffee into the top of the machine. This comes in very handy if you run out of coffee beans and have to break out the Folgers. Its also good for flavored coffees. The sugar on the outside of flavored coffee beans will clog up the grinder fairly quickly, so it is recommended that you grind it first and use the pre-ground setting.

It also has the tube for steaming milk for cappuccino, or it will pump out hot water if you want to make a cup of tea but don’t want to wait for the water to boil (my wife loves this feature for making tea).

So, in summary, once you get over the idea of paying a grand for a coffee maker, BUY THIS ONE! I love it, and I have had it for more than a year (according to the counter it has made 1342 cups of coffee since I bought it).
