The Tassimo single serving drink dispenser is an amazing concept. I first tried it at a friends house when I came over to watch movies. He told me he got a new coffee maker that would also make lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, and tea. In disbelief he showed me this small contraption on his counter, put a little disk in the top of it, and asked me to pick out the coffee cup I wanted my coffee in. I choose a mug, and he placed it in the machine. Within a minute I had a fresh cup of delicious coffee. A moment later, he made Earl Grey tea.

“No aftertaste of coffee?” “No, none whatsoever.”

Amazing.

Since then I have had many cups of many things made with the Tassimo system. A run down if you will: The tassimo beverage dispenser is a fully automated beverage maker. You purchase T-Discs of the beverages of choice, insert them into the Tassimo machine, put your cup in the machine, hit the start button, and within seconds (usually about 60 to a full cup) you have a fresh cup of whatever it is you want.

How it works is the T-discs have a barcode on them telling the Tassimo how long to brew the beverage, and how much water to use, so it is constant every time. To keep cross contamination from occuring, beverages are steeped and brewed in the T-Discs, so there is no residue going from one drink to the next.

Tassimo carries the Gevalia brand of coffee, along with Starbucks, Maxwell House, Seattles best, Tazo tea, Twinings tea, and many more. Prices on T-Disc packages vary from retailer to retailer, but usually 12 cups will run you about ten dollars.

The Nitty Gritty: The water container is in the back of the machine, which looks nice but is not as easy as other units to refill. The power button is on the back of the machine in a recessed area, so you often have to pull out the machine to turn it on, before hitting the magic button. Also, I wish instead of it automatically sensing cup size, you could choose how big you want your latte to be.

Pros: You can brew multiple cups of beverages and each one will taste how it should. You don’t have to deal with a whole pot of the same flavor beverage. All you have to do is hit the start button. It automatically determines how much water to use. You use your own cups. There is a mistake tray below that will catch one entire “mistake” if you forget to place a cup down.

Overall, the Tassimo is a great product. The first one-cup beverage dispenser of its kind, other competitor products have evolved a bit around this, but the Tassimo has a huge line-up of brand name drinks, and is inexpensive compared to similar machines. There are better one-cup dispensers out there, but there is more button pushing, and they are more expensive.

For someone who only drinks one cup at a time, likes variety, or has guests, this is a great system. If you have a house with four people who all like to drink different things you could make, for example, a cup of strong kona coffee, hot chocolate, a cappuccino, and earl grey tea, within 5 minutes, no extra! If you like kitchen gadgets and have a taste for variety, and don’t want to spend a lot, maybe a Tassimo is worth checking out.
