Just to add to danneauxs’s review, who does a top notch job expounding the virtues of this great coffeemaker, make sure you allow the Bodum to cool before cleaning and it will last a long time. And don’t use a scouring pad to clean, just use a soft sponge - it’s EASY to clean. I stick a paper towel in the jug and mash it around with a bottle brush. Takes about 15 seconds.

Since you stepped up to a vacuum coffeemaker, spend the dough and buy a good quality burr grinder. You can find a good one at Bed Bath & Beyond or similar for less than $50. It’s worth it. If you got the dough, the Rancilio Rocky is a helluva grinder, but it’s money, baby!

And yes, the Bodum requires more coffee grind than a auto-drip, and I’ve found that a medium to course grind (~35 on the Rocky) works best. Auto drips require medium to fine grind, for comparison. For the dimwits below who lament the weakness of the brew they made, this will fix the problem. (as Otter says to Greg at the end of the epic film Animal House, “Gee, you’re dumb!”) The coffee you get is WONDERFUL - not bitter or burnt at all, but very clean and smooth.

Good quality beans, freshly ground, added to clean filtered water, and you got it made! You don’t have to be a coffee geek to appreciate the difference, but you will have trouble enjoying an auto-drip brewed coffee ever again. The Bodum is a wonderful gadget, and my wife and I wouldn’t go back to our Bunn maker ever again.

Improvements to the machine? The design is really cool, and I like the physical look of the Bodum very much. If the plastic was a bit thicker, perhaps just 1/8″ more, it would help the machine feel sturdier. The lid is kinda chintsy, and could benefit from thickening as well, but if allowed to cool before cleaning, it works just fine. That’s it! The base with timer is great, with the pull out side mount for the funnel a neat add-on. We like this thing so much we’re buying the 6 cup version as Christmas gifts for family/friends this season. Enjoy!!
