After I finally grew tired of my Mr. Coffee espresso machine, I decided I was going to own an “ESE” certified pod machine. This is a trademark managed by the Italian government and there are restrictions and standards that must be followed before a machine and pods are allowed to use the mark (sort of like ‘UL’ listed). Anyway, you are hard-pressed to find a pod espresso machine that is ESE certified for under $200. I paid $130 (delivered) for my DeLonghi Bar 32 and I have total satisfaction–along with coffee house quality espresso. I was especially pleased since the machine came with an 18 pod tin of Illy espresso pods.

I do not understand the noise issue, it is a very quiet machine. I have not frothed milk yet, but steam-driven milk frothing is always noisy. I do agree, however, that the manual is incomprehensible (well, I may be exaggerating a bit). You can, however, forget the lights. I allow the machine to heat up for 5 minutes with the pod in place, then perfect espresso every time.

You get more than what you pay for with this machine. Yes, it’s not a fully automatic, but a short five-minute warm-up along with super easy to use pods (from the best espresso grind coffee company in the world) gives you great espresso.
