I love good coffee, sometimes roast my own green coffeebeans, and am always looking for a better way to brew. I dimly remember my father brewing coffee in a vacuum pot, from many years ago, and I guess a little of his love of gadgets got passed to me in the DNA. When I saw this coffeemaker on sale at Amazon, I had to try it out.

The basic operation is this: You have two glass “pots”. One is a coffee carafe similar to any coffee carafe, the other is a glass globe with a long glass tube extending down from the bottom. Where the tube attaches to the globe, there is a heavy rubber collar. There is a spring-loaded filter inside the globe, blocking the top of the tube. Got all that?

Grind your coffee (and you don’t buy pre-ground, do you?) fairly coarsely. Boil your water in a kettle, before you pour it into the coffeemaker. When the water is hot, pour it into the lower carafe, fit the upper globe on top with the tube extending into the carafe, and place the coffee grounds in the upper globe. Place the carafe and globe (careful, it’s a little top-heavy) over a heat source, perhaps over a gas burner on a stove. You want the water to boil. As the water starts to boil, the increasing pressure in the carafe forces the water up the tube, past the filter and into the upper globe. Stir the water into the grounds with a wooden spoon, and time for a couple of minutes, 2 to 4 seems to work. Do NOT allow the carafe to boil dry! It will crack and break if you do.

After a couple of minutes, turn off the heat. The coffee will swoosh back down into the carafe, leaving the grounds in the upper globe. Remove it carefully (it’s hot!), and place it on its stand. Pour your coffee and enjoy it while its hot!

It’s a little involved for everyday coffee making, but it’s great fun for company, especially if you can get a spirit lamp to heat the water at the table. And be careful washing both the carafe and the globe; they can break easily.

Also, the spring-loaded filter is kind of … OK, I guess, but go to ebay and get a “Cory filter rod”. It’s a glass rod that substitutes for the filter, and is easier to clean. Does a good job too.
