I had Krups coffee maker that lasted 18 years or so, and I was very happy with it right up until the end. So naturally when it needed to be replaced, I immediately figured I’d buy another Krups.

Boy am I disappointed! Compared to the old one, the water gauge is very hard to read. The old one had a floating ball in it which not only made it easy to see, but helped keep air bubbles out of the gauge so you knew how much water you had.

The stainless steel carafe- isn’t. Stainless that is. In less than a month it had permanent coffee stains inside that wouldn’t wash out. With all the brouhaha about Chinese materials, I began to question what materials went into the carafe.

As other reviewers have noted, the coffee is on the cool side, even when preheating the carafe with hot water! I’m not a coffee snob, but I sure don’t want to microwave every cup just to get it warm enough to enjoy drinking.

The way the carafe is designed, the pour opening is not in the usual place. The sides of the caraffe wrap around onto the top substantially. Sounds like some obscure design detail, right? Well the result is that in order to pour out the last 1/2 cup of coffee, you actually have to hold the carafe upside down!!

And here’s the clincher: When I bought it (Xmas ‘07) there was a substantial rebate offer- I can’t remember if it was $15 or $20 or whatever. My wife, who is VERY careful about these things, followed the instructions to a tee and then photocopied everything she mailed in and kept the record. Well 2-3 months later, we get a postcard saying the rebate was being denied because the upc code we cut out from the side of the box was wrong. We had a photocopy of the UPC from the box in our hands!

That was the last straw. I’m about the last person to ask for a refund- I’m pretty big on “caveat emptor.” But I marched into Fred Meyer with the unit and all the documentation and got my $99 back. A lesser store might not have honored that, but the gained my loyalty as a customer. Krupps, I must say, lost a very loyal customer.
