When I was in the market to buy a 4-cup coffee maker, I was looking for three major factors, viz., price, pot design and ease of use. I bought the Black and Decker DCM500 at an unbeatable price, $13.50 at KMart. This is a big plus point for the coffee maker. The second major plus point lies in its design. It has very few parts and the body is stunningly simple in design. For a small coffee maker I personally do not expect complicated designs. There is also no point in having auto start or auto shut off in compact designs (which people buy for immediate brewing and consumption) since they are pretty much useless. I dont think there are very many people around who brew one cup of coffee and keep it lying around all day on a warmer !! One irritant in many compact designs is that the covers do not open or snap shut easily and one has to wrestle with it. I usually keep my coffee maker over the microwave and wrestling incidents have resulted in dropped and broken coffee pots. DCM500 has single access cover and opens and shuts easily unlike any other designs on the market. I really appreciated this feature and may have even been the reason why I bought this coffee maker. I was particularly impressed with the design of carafe. It pours an elegant and fine dripless stream of coffee. The person who tested this machine at Black and Decker, certainly likes lightly brewed coffee ! I suspect that the temperature to which the water reaches is lower, which may result in incomplete brewing. For a larger capacity design this may be a good feature and lower temperatures may prevent overbrewing. Smaller volumes need water to reach higher temperatures for a better brew. In my opinion for a small coffee maker, if it is hisses a lot it is a good indication that you will have a strong cup of coffee. I would recommend this coffee maker for people who prefer light brews.
