This is a preliminary review.
I’m making my second pot of coffee with this machine as I type this, so please do check back in a week or so for the more in-depth details. And for those of you who are wondering, I am a coffee fan. I’ll get around to reviewing non-coffeemaker items later.
The Brewstation Deluxe is a carafe-less coffee maker. I suppose the concept is like those huge urns used in foodservice, but this is a manageable size for home use (no bigger than a normal 12-cup coffeepot) and it has more features.
I had been considering the Cuisinart DCC 2000 at $100 and the Hamilton Beach original BrewStation at $40. The Cuisinart seemed a bit expensive, although it looks more impressive than the Brewstations. And the original BrewStation looked a bit flimsy, as well as the store I was visiting only having open box items (read my Mr Coffee 4 cup review for an open box experience).
I ran into this updated model at a bed and bath store locally. It was $80, and featured water filtration as well as a permanent filter. Seemed like a pleasant mix between the two extremes I’d been considering.
The pause and serve is pretty good, considering its default state is in pause, not in serve. You press the silver bar with your mug or cup, and this opens the pause and serve type valve. If you don’t take the cup away too fast, you don’t get spills. And the unit is heavy enough that even my huge ceramic 15oz mugs don’t tip it or even move it.
The clock is bright blue (it doubles as a nightlight in the kitchen now) and the controls are easy to choose from. You can set your heater time to 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours. Making iced coffee or hot water for cooking? Go with 0 hours (shuts off once it’s done brewing). Going to be sipping for a while? Set it a bit longer.
The four settings for coffee brew control seem pretty clear. First is regular. I haven’t used that yet. Second is decaf. I’m brewing this now. Third is “Flavor ” which I tried yesterday with some Peets beans, and it definitely made a rich brew. Fourth is 1-4cup which is good for the last minute sort of brew, or trying a new kind of coffee.
The water filter feature comes in the form of a charcoal filter pod. It’s about the size of a chocolate covered cherry, and goes in a plastic scoop in the water reservoir. The pot comes with one, and they recommend changing it every 30-60 days (60 brewing cycles), so if you get the coffeemaker and like it, you should start looking for replacements (search for item 80674 on hamiltonbeach’s website). As I’ve mentioned in another review, filtered water will help keep your coffeemaker clean and your coffee tasting better. And really, $10-12 for 120 pots of clean water is pretty good. Might even be cheaper than that Brita filter your pitcher uses, and you don’t have to wait as long for the filtering to happen.
In general, I’m pretty happy with this coffeemaker. I will update the review in the next week as I use it more; I think I’ve given a fair overview but it won’t be until I’ve made a few more pots of coffee that I know how I really feel about it. I am pretty sure I won’t return it though, it’s just whether I’ll be gushing as much next weekend.
A note about cleaning. The two things I’ve found of note are the filter basket and the brewed-coffee reservoir. The permanent gold-tone filter basket is a bit of a challenge to rinse out, not specific to this model. I’ve started using a paper filter with it for convenience. The reservoir has a metal disc in it that conducts heat from the heating element, and some grounds seem to appear on that disc, requiring a quick wipe during rinsing/cleaning. Nothing major.
