BEWARE of durability and poor customer service.

I was in coffee heaven the first 4 months of use. It was much cheaper than it’s other competitors (Cuisinart, Capresso) and looked like a better design than the other 2.

The coffee was great. It brewed fast and it tasted fresh. Although the filter involved more cleaning than paper filters, it was not that big of a drawback compared to the quality of coffee it brewed.

Initially, the only complaint I had about the unit was it automatically turning off after only an hour without having the option to override this feature. Additionally, a 12 cup carafe would have been more useful too.

Well…after 4 months of gentle use, the tab on the lid that secures the lid over the filter basket started to break off and the lid would not shut. This lid needs to be down for the sensor on the grinder to work. It will still function if I physically hold down the lid during the grinding process. However, this makes the timer aspect useless unless I can weight it down with something.

Melitta’s initial customer service response was for me to contact the manufacturer, Salton. Melitta would not even stand by their product. Then I got the following recommendation after complaining about the first response:

“At this time, the part you have requested is not available. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or frustration that you may incur as a result. I would recommend using rubber bands, tape, or a heavy object to secure down the lid. If you would like to replace the coffee maker with that or a similar model, please visit our online store at www.eSalton.com for information on similar products that we do currently manufacturer.”

Of course if I follow their recommendation, I will have melting rubber or gooey tape since the lid gets quite hot during the brewing process. If I place something heavy over the lid, then I will be blocking the vents where the steam escapes. That does not seem too smart.

To their benefit, I was able to eventually get them to replace the unit if I sent it in to them, but it took a great deal of complaining.
