I love a good cup of coffee! The problem is finding the good coffee machine that lasts more than a few months. I have used the gamut of brands and price ranges of coffee makers. From Melitta, Mr. Coffee to Black & Decker and Braun. Prices from $29.99 to $59.99. All of them lasted only 6 months to 2 years before they each stopped working in their own wonderful way. One had all the water leak profusely out of the reservoir right after I filled it, sending me scurrying for towels or anything to catch the flood. Another’s heating coil just “snapped”. and that was that. Anyway, it seems as though our kitchen gets re-decorated with one model of coffee maker after another so often, I almost can’t keep up.

I purchased my Krups Crystal Aroma coffee maker just under a year ago. I thought Krups was a well-made and respected brand and worth the $49.99 I shelled out. Needless to say, I’m here, taking the time to write a not-so-great review, and as you can guess, this one TOO is on it’s way out quick!

The Krups started out very well, brewing a nice cup of coffee, hot temperature, “ok” pouring carafe. (It drips if you try to pour more than a trickle). The whole top of the machine lifts backwards to fill the reservoir, so you have to slide the coffee maker completely out from the countertop-versus some which half the top opens or a small lid on the top for convenience. A couple months ago (approx. 3-4 months after purchasing said coffee maker), it started occasionally leaking water and/or coffee under the machine. This is nice, as it leaves a large oval brown stain on your countertop surface!

The water reservoir CAN NOT be filled any more than the 10 cups, or it will overflow…you guess it, all over your counter! There are some charcoal filters that cost $9.99 for 2, and the little gauge that spins on the face of the machine to tell you when to replace them seems to show that it wants a new filter every 1-1/2 to 2 weeks (recommended replacement is monthly or so).

After all this, it is now taking 10 to 12 minutes to brew ONE 10-cup pot of coffee. Down from 7 minutes when it was new. This really gets to my husband! You should hear him when he hasn’t had his coffee before going to work!!!

I called the Krups customer service #, and they told me it could be because of buildups and deposits that may be plugging up the tubes and to clean the machine with vinegar. I told him I clean it regularly, and he really didn’t know what could be wrong! I know…it’s a piece of crap machine!!!

Needless to say, I’m back in the market for a new coffee maker, and if anyone knows of a good one, please feel free to share that secret!!!
