For over a decade I brewed coffee in an ancient machine, and then transferred the coffee to a thermal carafe. Not exactly an elegant process, but we had great coffee that stayed very hot for hours. We have a home office and people dropping in at odd times, so it is nice to be able to offer them coffee without having to brew anew each time.

When the interrupt-pour feature went belly up on the , and I couldn’t get a replacement part, we decided to get a new machine, combining carafe and brewer. I read many reviews, and was left undecided. The hubby finally got tired of my indecision and went out and bought this beast.

I’ve had the several months, and it is merely adequate. The quality of the coffee brewed is NOT up to the standard of my old , which irks me to no end. The lid on the carafe is a bit fussy, doesn’t always slide in easily to machine, and pours out in a slow, splashy stream (though it doesn’t spill on the counter like my did…). If I do not overfill the water reservoir, I do not have overflow problems, so I am uncertain why so many other folks have that problem. (Spoke too soon - see my update below!! ). I use reusable metal cone filters, not paper - and they do not fit in the filter holder. I had to take tin snips and trim the plastic tops of my cone filters until they fit into the holder. GRRR. And lastly, the clock is not watertight as I discovered the one time I overfilled the reservoir - the clock face misted up, but this dissipated within a day, and it continued to work.

A word of warning, this is a tall machine, so you might want to make sure it will fit in your kitchen if it has to go under shelves/cabinets.

For now, we are living with this machine. I know there are better ones out there, and this one’s days are numbered. My biggest gripe is that the coffee is just blah.

SEPTEMBER 2007 UPDATE-

Well, I knew this unit’s days were numbered. I got used to the mediocre coffee and just sort of grumbled along w/ this. But, then the machine began leaking out of the filter holder (and all over my counter, onto the wood floor, the oriental rug….etc). I assumed we ground the coffee too fine, cleaned up the considerable mess, and brewed another pot. This event increased in frequency until it became a daily occurrence - NOT attributable to the grind of the beans nor cleanliness of the unit (I even used pipe cleaners to ream out every nook and cranny of the filter holder and the carafe lid). Sick of the mess, I called , who were only willing to replace the unit with another and the service rep gave a lot of pushback and attitude. I then contacted the store where purchased (Kitchen Kaboodle in Portland, OR), and they tried to refer me back to . After taking my complaints to the company’s customer service manager, I am finally getting a store credit. Gee, I miss my old $35 horribly! Well, for better or worse (and I suspect worse) I am going to use my store credit to buy a Capresso MT500. Is it really that difficult to design a decent thermal ???
