Several months ago, I bought (and reviewed) a Cuisinart 4-cup coffee maker that I had purchased for my office. Although I gave it a good review (and it’s still a good machine), I am usually just brewing a cup for myself in the morning, so the idea of waiting 5 minutes (sometimes longer) for the coffee and then having to clean the basket and the pot grew more and more irritating over time.

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are worse things in life, but I was looking for something that would produce the same great coffee (and HOT) with less fuss.

That’s the Mr. Coffee Simple Brew. I love the fact that it’s compact — it takes up about the same amount of space as the Cuisinart 4 cup although it’s a little taller. Once it heats the water (it’s a “pressure” brewer), it makes a cup in about 30 seconds.

The brew head is adjustable up and down for different sized cups (up to 14 oz). And you can use regular ground coffee or pods — there are three holders/screens: one for one pod, one for two, and one for ground coffee.

You can make two cups at a time. It makes a hot cup of coffee. I used Senseo coffee pods, but the manufacturer recommends a few other brands, and Senseo was not among them. Last but not least (on the good side) it is much simpler to clean up than a traditional drip coffee maker.

What I don’t like is that you can only make coffee or tea. Senseo makes a cappucino pod, but when I tried to use it in this coffee maker, the result was caramel-colored water — the coffee in the pod got “stuck” above the dry creamer, so it didn’t brew it. Overall, I’m pleased with the product. It was reasonably priced — I paid $49.99.
