I’ve used both this version (for myself) and its 12-cup big sister (for groups) for years without problem or mishap. The smaller version — the FCP280 — is perfect for the single coffee drinker; it can make for two if neither are power drinkers, but after that, you should step up in size. (The plugs are interchangeable and so are the lids; I’ve used the smaller basket in the larger pot with no ill effects.)

The perk pot is quick to boil and quick to finish and produces a super cup of coffee that stays hot and doesn’t scald. It’s practically foolproof to use and the plastic handle stays cool to the touch while the cord is long enough for me to have it plugged in on one end of my kitchen counter and bring the pot itself by the sink on the other end so that I can deposit the basket.

The pot is also durable in the extreme — I’ve accidentally left in on so long that the coffee has boiled out and the element is running dry, banged it about, and it took more than seven years of daily (and not always respectful) use before it finally gave up the ghost. I’m replacing it with the exact same model.

My experience, unlike several of the other reviewers here, is that buying specially-ground coffee isn’t necessary. I grind my own, an unscientific process, and have had to use various pre-ground cannisters of store-bought and have had no bad experiences.

If I’d change anything about this caffeine-providing treasure, it would be to have some sort of light to indicate that it’s on (I have burned my hand moving a pot I didn’t realize was still plugged in) and to have an on/off switch so that there was some means of turning the pot off other than pulling the plug out of the socket.
