The folks at had a great idea in coming up with a new concept in consumer coffee-making technology, the integrated coffee maker with an instant dispenser. The mechanism is simple: it sucks the water from a reservoir in the back, drops the hot water from the top into the coffee ground basket/filter, and drips the coffee into the internal basin. The basin dispenses the coffee when a cup is pushed against the button (similar to a soda fountain).

Unfortunately, the engineering has considerable problems. Once the coffee has been MADE, the unit functions very well, but the making of the coffee can be quite messy. In order to obtain compactness (or maybe for aesthetic reasons), the hole in which the water is initially poured is an asymmetrical half-moon shape, less than an inch wide, almost guaranteeing that some water will be spilled.

Also, because there is no coffee pot, the internal basin itself detaches to measure the water to be used, but the spout was not well engineered, causing water to spill out on either side sometimes. It doesn’t help that the top swings open but only at a 90-degree angle, which means that the coffee machine cannot be filled under any circumstances if it is sitting on a counter up against a wall (i.e., it has to be moved).

Moreover, because everything occurs internally, condensation collects on the underside of the lid, and when it is swung open, it literally pours down: unfortunately, most of it ends up in the reservoir, which means that you are going to have coffee in tomorrow’s water.

Finally, the basket does not hold enough coffee grounds to make a full 10 cups (for those of us that like slightly stronger coffee). Although it is a standard size, the water-dispensing mechanism is pushed into the coffee basket when the unit is closed up, causing the moist grounds to gum up the holes in the water-dispenser.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy much of the convenience of this product, but I think it could have been engineered better. Hopefully, later models will fix some of these problems. One thing is for sure though: The sticker on the package indicated “No Carafe, No Pouring, No Spills” is incorrect except for having no carafe.
