This coffee maker makes great coffee and looks great when new, but after using it for less than six months, I had to throw it away. I purchased it directly from the manufacturer, and they have a terrible customer service department. There’s actually no way to talk to a person at the company about warranty service, and they do not reply to e-mail or voice-mail messages. A leak has developed at the water level indicator. Because of the great coffee that it makes, I was willing to tolerate its many design flaws until the leak rendered it useless.
As other reviewers have mentioned, coffee can drip down the front of the pot during the brewing cycle. This isn’t just a cleaning problem; coffee actually gunks up the auto-off switch just below it. The switch then sticks in the on position disabling the safety feature.
When the switch is working, the spring provides enough force to push the carafe away, stopping the brewing cycle (the dripping coffee helps this by lubricating the counter surface).
It’s hard to understand why they made it so difficult to insert the grounds basket. There’s no reason for the locking mechanism in the folding handle, and the handle gets in the way when trying to dump the grounds and filter out.
The sight-glass water level indicator is difficult read because the surface behind it is black, and there’s no floating indicator like in the $20 coffee makers.
The charcoal filter holder is poorly designed and tested. It doesn’t properly fit the hole in the bottom of the reservoir, and comes loose from the pressure of adding water.
Unlike the $20 coffee makers, the clock has absolutely no tolerance to short power outages. It must be reset even if power is lost for less than a second. Also, if the auto-start timer is on, one cannot start the brewing cycle early by just pressing the brew button; you need to first turn off the timer. The timer is, of course, not reliable because of the sliding carafe issue mentioned earlier: set up the coffee maker, set the timer, and wake up the next morning to discover that the carafe has been pushed away from the brewer, disabling the brewing cycle.
Considering that the person(s) who designed this coffee maker has such poor engineering skills, I’m sure the great coffee was just an accident.
