For Fathers Day I purchased my husband a Cuisinart Grind and Brew Coffeemaker.

One nice feature about this machine is the larger coffee carafe, it holds 12 (5 ounce) cups as opposed to most others which only hold 10. It has a cord storage area in the back of the unit - (you shove the cord inside and pull it out when needed. This is what I consider to be another nice feature - no more dangling electrical cords.)

It has a digital clock/timer, so you can set the timer on it to start brewing prior to your waking up in the morning. However, if you are grinding coffee beans I doubt you could sleep through the noise. I found this machine to be a lot louder than a regular stand alone coffee bean grinder. It has a button so you can skip the grinding process, so if you are using pre-ground coffee grinds you would press this button. It also has a button to select 1-4 cups of coffee (or you can just add enough water for 1 to 4 cups of coffee - it does the same thing.)

What I don’t like about this machine is:

It’s extremely noisy during the grinding process. You could use it in place of an alarm clock in the morning.

The grinding compartment MUST be cleaned and dried after each use and is made more difficult because condensation forms inside of it once the machine starts brewing. The cover to the grinding basket must be cleaned of the freshly ground coffee grinds as well. Since all the grinds are now wet from the condensation it was difficult to clean. I found it to be too time consuming to warrant all the extra cleaning.

It has a charcoal water filter which you have to remember to replace every few months. We tried brewing with and without the charcoal filter so we know the flavor of the coffee had nothing to do with the filter.

We tried using Maxwell House Coffee, Starbucks Mild Ground Coffee and also Starbucks Mild Coffee Beans. The coffee smelled metallic and also had a metallic taste (if you have ever gone for a CAT SCAN with Contrast you’ll know what taste I’m talking about). We had the same results no matter which coffee we used. However, the Starbucks hid the flavor more than the Maxwell House.

We tried cleaning it according to the Manufactures suggestions (vinegar and water) with the same results - a lousy cup of coffee each time. We tried it for 2 weeks and are returning it to the store (JC Penney) for a full refund.

We had the black unit which shows dust more than the white, so if you don’t want to see the dust in your kitchen, get the white version.

We paid $99 for this unit at JC Penney and received a full refund upon returning it along with our shipping and handling because it was considered to be defective.
