I bought this coffeemaker at one of the large discount stores (the one with the red target as a logo) for $20. I chose it over the $15 model with no timer, as I like to know the time when I’m making coffee. In the short form, the extra features frustrated me a bit but I felt I got a fair deal.

I’d been using a 12-cup coffeemaker (my review) that was bulkier, and I found I didn’t drink a full pot each evening. I’d make 10 cups and drink about 7. My theory was that a smaller coffeemaker would mean less waste and fresher coffee. It would also leave more space on the counter.

This coffeemaker took care of the space issue, and the coffee does tend to be fresher when I go for a second cup because I end up making another pot. I use 15oz coffee mugs and that’s 3 “cups” in coffeemaker parlance (1 “cup” is 5 oz in coffeemaker speak, not 8 oz). It’s much easier to go from regular to decaf on short notice, or to change types for visitors, and it cleans easily as well.

The filter basket is easily removable (no snaps or latches to move). You have to make sure it’s settled in properly or the top won’t close. Two other hints that I caught onto eventually… first, use 1-4 cup filters, not the regular one-size-fits-all filters. Second, put your filter and coffee in and close the top, and then put the carafe in. Otherwise, you may push the top open with the carafe pushing the filter basket up.

The particular item I got had a flaky clock/timer which would lose an hour a day sometimes. Imagine a battery powered clock with the battery contacts loose. That seems to be what’s happening on this timer. It may just be a fluke on this particular piece, as I can’t imagine it being broken for everyone.

And as with all pause and serve coffeemakers I’ve seen and used, this one drips from time to time with the carafe removed.

There are a few coffeemakers out there with 5 cup capacity, which would probably be better for folks who use large cups.

And another quick hint, you’ll have to clean the machine less often if you use filtered water rather than straight tap water. Your coffee will probably taste better too.
