I don’t drink much coffee (mainly in the winter, and then maybe once or twice a week). However, my wife has the stuff running through her veins. She had been using the same coffee maker for 12 years. It was starting to show wear and tear. You could hardly read any of the labeling, and it often acted up from too many coffee overflows into the circuitry.
Often she only wanted to make one or two cups to get going in the morning. The problem with regular coffee makers is that the first few cups in the pot are extremely strong. Therefore, you must brew a full pot for optimal flavor, resulting in wasted coffee. Last Christmas, my wife’s mother sought to solve the problem by giving her a Melitta two cup coffee maker with travel mugs. This was great, except now we had two coffee makers permanently on the counter. She had gotten herself a Hamilton Beach Brewstation, which is what my wife really wanted.
So here is the dilemma I faced this Christmas. I needed a coffee maker with the convenience of the Brew Station, the ability to brew small batches perfectly, and the ability to accept tall travel mugs. I purchased the Hamilton Beach Brewstation Deluxe. Problem Solved! The deluxe costs about $30 more than the standard Brewstation, but the extra features and impressive looks are worth the added cost.
Below are some features the Deluxe shares with the standard Brewstation:
12 Cup capacity
No Carafe
Programmable
Auto Shutoff
Accepts standard coffee filters
Enclosed brewing system
No hot plate to scorch coffee
Stainless steel drip tray
Convenient one handed operation
Now for features only found on the Deluxe.
Drip Tray is removable
Auto Shutoff options of 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours
Large digital clock with blue backlight.
Swivel base for easy filling
Four brew settings (Normal, full flavor, decaf, 1-4 cups)
Accepts tall travel mugs
Makes iced coffee
Gold tone coffee filter basket
Water filter
I must say that the swivel base is a godsend. I was getting so tired of having to pull the old coffee maker out from under the cabinet in order to pour all of the water into the tank. With the Brewstation Deluxe, I just turn the coffee maker around and have instant full access to the tank.
The gold tone coffee filter basket is supposed to enhance the flavor of the coffee. I personally can’t tell a difference, and dislike the cleanup of the filter. I still use a paper filter. I don’t consider this a con, just a personal preference.
All of my wife’s travel mugs fit nicely under the Deluxe, so I don’t have to pull the coffee maker to the edge of the counter like my mother-in-law does. Nanny, nanny, boo boo.
The idea of having a water filter is nice. I have used the Brewstation Deluxe, both with and without the filter, with no noticeable difference in flavor. Each filter is good for 60 brew cycles. At $9.99 a pop for replacements, the jury is still out on whether this feature is truly that important. If you have the ten bucks (plus shipping) to spend every 60 cycles, go for it.
The different brew cycles are a very nice feature. The 1-4 cup cycle is great for making sure that a small pot of coffee tastes just as good as a full pot. The flavor cycle is for those who like a stouter cup of coffee without having to add extra grounds. The decaf setting optimizes the brewing cycle to compensate for the poorer quality of coffee used in making decaf coffee. And of course, there is the normal cycle. I have yet to use the decaf cycle (my wife sees no purpose for decaf coffee in in her life), but each of the other cycles worked just as they were supposed to.
One might contend that an advantage a carafe coffee maker would have over the Brewstation Deluxe, is the ability to take the carafe and walk around a room and fill coffee cups like a proper host or hostess. This can be done with the Brewstation Deluxe as well. The coffee tank can be easily removed from the maker. It has both an handle and pour spout, allowing for transporting across a room to fill coffee cups.
So far the Brewstation Deluxe has lived up to my every expectation. It has been well worth the extra $30. Once again, I have ONE coffee maker and all is right with the world.
Special Note: Apparently, the original Brewstation had problems with leaking coffee. The Brewstation Deluxe comes with two replacement gaskets, so hopefully this will not become a problem.
