At one point a few months ago I had a lovely Gevalia coffeemaker we got free a few years back when we signed up with them. Alas, my mother-in-law decided to knick the carafe and create a small hole. My husband kept using it, and things were okay until my mother-in-law just finally shattered the carafe! Can we say clumsy?! So, I searched Wal-Mart looking for what seemed like a decent coffeemaker. I saw the Hamilton Beach 10-cup BrewStation and picked it up. Needless to say, as soon as I cleaned it, it bit the dust! So, I exchanged it at Wal-Mart for this 12-cup one.
::: The Product :::
We actually have the Hamilton Beach BrewStation Plus 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Timer (style 47665). It’s black, with a stainless steel looking front. There’s 4 buttons along the right side: On-Off, Auto, Hour, and Minute. The clock is pretty big with a blue illuminating light behind black digits. Perfect for seeing the time at night… Or way early morning, which is when my husband uses it. There’s also a filter on the inside which helps prevent coffee grinds into your mug. It’s a small little filter which you can take out to clean when you’re cleaning the coffee maker.
In order to use this lovely machine, you take the basket off the “carafe,” and pour the water in. Then you have to pour the water into the reservoir (I can see how this can be irritating to some). The markers for how many cups you’re making is actually noted with little cups, which might make it a tad hard for when you’re making odd numbered cups of coffee. So, once the water is poured into the reservoir, you put the basket back on top, and either hit the “On-Off” button to brew right then and there, or hit “Auto” so it’ll make the coffee at your desired time.
The following features are available on the Hamilton Beach BrewStation Plus 12-Cup with Timer:
*** 2- hour auto shutoff
*** Programmable clock-timer
*** Gentle warming heater
*** No hot plate to scorch coffee flavor
*** Enclosed brewing system with thermal insulation
::: My Experience :::
After my mother-in-law broke my $100 FREE Gevalia coffeemaker, I wanted something that wouldn’t get broken easily or quickly! Now, as I mentioned above, my 10-cup BrewStation bit the dust only 2 months into having it. I simply cleaned it with the cleaner it came with, and it quit percolating. Ugh! So, I knew it was a good product, but I had wanted the 12-cup station anyway. So, I exchanged the first one at Wal-Mart and just paid the difference of about $20. The 12-cup is much better as you can use travel mugs, and the 10-cup was only big enough for regular coffee mugs.
My husband loves how the coffee doesn’t get that nasty “burnt” taste like it’s been sitting on the heater for too long. I don’t drink “regular” coffee, so I don’t even really use the machine short of making him coffee. However, I like the feature of the push-button dispensing. You simply hold your cup up to the button, and coffee freely flows into the cup! So, let’s just say you have a rowdy 3 year-old tugging on your left hand, and you REALLY want coffee! Your child can tug all s/he wants on your left arm, because you only need one hand to get coffee! However, I can’t tell you what to do after you’ve gotten the coffee and still have child attached LOL!
Another great thing is the fact the coffeemaker shuts itself off after 2 hours… Mind you, the coffee doesn’t turn to tar within that time either. It stays just as fresh as when you initially made it. So, you can essentially get a fresh cup of coffee even an hour after you’ve made it! I assume what makes this possible is the heating plate under the “carafe.”
::: Purchasing & Pricing Information :::
Hamilton Beach products can generally be purchased in stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, and other super stores. The MSRP is $59.99, but Wal-Mart had it for $49.96.
::: Recommendation :::
I recommend the 12-Cup, but not the 10-Cup. It might’ve been a fluke that it quit working so quickly, or when I cleaned it, but it was still a pain when you wanted to use a travel mug! It’s a very easy to use coffeemaker, and the added benefit of not having a glass carafe to break helps! Not to mention the one-hand dispensing, no “burnt” coffee taste, and automatic shut-off feature!
