I’ve never written a review about a coffee maker, but this one merits mentioning. The Black and Decker Smart Brew 12-Cup Coffee Maker (DCM2000) is a workhorse. It has served our office faithfully, almost every weekday for around two years.

The machine is not too large or too small. It measures about 13 inches in height. We can and do easily serve coffee to larger groups if there is a meeting one day or we can opt to brew a small pot of coffee for just two or three people, which we often do in the morning. Brewing 12 large cups of coffee is no problem with the Black and Decker Smart Brew.

The color of our Black and Decker Smart Brew we have is black. With so many people pouring from it each day, it doesn’t show possible splash marks as readily as a white coffee maker might. In other words, it always looks clean, even when it isn’t!

The Black and Decker Smart Brew uses “size 4″ coffee filters, and any brand will do. I often get the coffee brewing each morning. We use the filtered (Brita) water, since in our part of the state, the tap water is known to taste pretty bad. Using one of the paper filters, I just scoop the desired amount of coffee into the filter, which is inside the filter holder, pour the water in to the water receptacle at the back of the machine, close the lid and simply push the “on” button. The coffee is ready in a matter of (less than 15) minutes and always smells great to everyone in the office.

The water receptacle has a clear plastic “window” at each side with the number of cups marked, so that you can see how far up you’ve filled it with water. This is a very handy feature especially for me, since I never have to try to guess at how much water I need to put in.

The filter holder is removable for easy removing of used filters and grounds. I know with our old coffee maker, it was not removable, so I was forever trying to get the filter and old coffee grounds out, often with less than satisfactory results, such as the spilling of grounds all over the floor! What a mess. Not so with the Black and Decker Smart Brew.

It is recommended to use one heaping tablespoon for every two cups or adjust to your own preference (strong or weak coffee). We prefer our coffee strong, so we use a little more.

As with most coffee makers, the carafe sits on the hot plate, which keeps the coffee warm, ready for when you go back for a second cup or a warm-up. We keep it sitting on the end of our counter-top in one of the work areas and even though the cord is a bit short, it is not a problem.

When you lift up the lid, you’ll notice that there are several holes in the part under the cover. This is for even water distribution when coffee is being brewed.

Make sure the unit is OFF and cool when cleaning, a very important rule to follow. You can burn yourself otherwise. Also, very important when washing or rinsing the carafe out - make sure it is also cool to the touch. I have seen carafes easily broken or crack when they are rinsed with cold water while still hot.

Of course, common sense tells you never to immerse the unit in water. The manufacturer advises using a damp cloth to wipe the hot plate off, and never to use an abrasive cleaner. This goes for the carafe too.

The carafe is nice because it never drips for us. The lid of the carafe is hinged too, for easy cleaning. Do not clean any of the parts in the dishwasher. (Our old carafe dripped every single time we poured from it no matter how hard we tried to prevent it.)

Occasionally we “brew” a mixture of water and a Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to clean out the coffee machine. Then we run a pot of clean water through to rid any remaining vinegar taste before we begin brewing coffee again. It’s a good method of keeping your coffee maker in good running condition and maintaining the best tasting coffee possible.

Although I personally did not buy the Black and Decker Smart Brew since we use it in our office, I was told it cost in the range of $20.00. I recommend it highly for use in your home or office. Now, whose turn is it to bring the milk?
