I’ve had the F9 for a couple of years. It brews a great shot of espresso. Other good things are that it has sensors that tell you lots of things - when to add beans (though only after it is too late and you have used your last partial shot of beans), when to add water, and when the machine needs cleaning.

The cleaning is an automatic process that uses one of their cleaning tablets. Basically push a few buttons and put the tablet in the coffee hopper. Takes about 15 minutes.

The used grounds bin and the tray for excess water are in the same place and it is pretty easy to take everything out to clean. I haven’t kept track, but maybe every 15-25 shots till the bin is full. It’s more than enough.

Now on to some of the annoyances. When turning on the machine it will take a minute or so to warm up. If you are steaming milk, then you press the steam button and it takes another minute or so for that to warm up. It would be nice to just push the on button and the steamer button right away and be able to come back 2 minutes later.

Next the steamer. The steam wand has a sleeve that slides up and down. Presumably this is to froth the milk. To me that is just more to clean and so I would recommend that you just disassemble and remove that sleeve. If you need more foam, just move the cup of milk up and down.

Further on the steamer, there is no place to hold your milk pitcher while steaming. I suppose they expect you to hold it in your hand for the few minutes it takes to steam. If there were a little shelf, or the wand was positioned lower, no hand holding would be necessary. Tip: I use a rolled up kitchen towel as a portable shelf to hold the pitcher in place. A properly sized block of wood or plastic would also do well.

Again on the steamer, the maximum steam time is a minute. You can program a few settings, like 15 secs, 30 secs, 45 secs, or 60 secs - something like that. I don’t know about anyone else, but one serving of milk for one latte takes a little over 2 minutes, and for two servings, like 3-4 minutes. As such, one must start the steamer, wait 60 seconds, then start the steamer again, etc. It would be nice if the machine had higher preset times or at least an “unlimited” setting so that I do not have to keep coming back to the machine to push a button.

Next on the control panel. While there are physical hard buttons on the side panels of the machine, to actually brew a cup takes pressing an hidden, lighted button on the central panel. It took a while to figure that part out, hah. Anyway, the button cannot be pressed with a wet finger as it won’t detect it. So sometimes, I must dry my thumb and the panel, then try it again.

The machine does not do half shots, if it matters to you.

To sum it up, great quality of espresso brew, not so “automatic”, as the machine is not set up to maximize your time. You need to push the on button, wait a minute, push the steam button, wait a minute, push the steam button to start the steaming, wait a minute, push the steam button again, wait a minute, push the steam button again, wait 15 seconds, turn off the steam button, wait 30 seconds, push the brew button, wait 20 seconds. Then enjoy your latte.
