After my daughter was born almost four years ago I found myself housebound. Due to her being on oxygen around the clock, as well as her having a compromised immune system, it was recommended that we take her out of the house only for short periods, if at all, and nowhere that there were a lot of people. That meant no going out for lunch, no shopping at the mall, no meeting my friends for a coffee. So I was quite delighted when four of my friends stopped by for coffee to surprise me! I quickly started a pot of coffee in my three-month-old Black and Decker coffee maker and we all proceeded to have a lovely catch up visit. After they had all left, I was horrified to discover that I had served them all cold coffee. No wonder none of them had had more than a sip or two of their coffee! The Black and Decker had bit the dust! I sent my husband straight out the door when he came home later that day to buy a new coffeemaker. And what did he come home with? The Hamilton Beach Aroma Express 49284.

Features of My Black Beauty

The Hamilton Beach Aroma Express 49284 is a black, two to twelve cup coffeemaker. It features:

Dishwasher safe ten cup removable water reservoir

Programmable digital clock/timer with automatic shutoff

Dishwasher safe carafe

Auto pause ‘n serve

Comfortable carafe handle

Removable filter holder

Accelerated brewing

Nonstick keep-hot plate (Yes, hot coffee on a keep-hot plate! LOL)

The carafe is clearly marked for measuring the water should you decide not to use the removable water reservoir. When using the clearly marked water reservoir it is only possible to make ten cups of coffee or less, so if you wish to make twelve cups just remove the reservoir and pour the water in from the carafe. The swing-out filter basket opened wide enough to easily remove the filter holder, and I never had any problem with it popping open. The On/Off/Auto and the Hour/Minute/Program buttons are all easily read and easy to program.

Did He Do Good?

Oh yes, my husband chose well! I really loved the blue water reservoir. It made filling the coffee maker much less messy. Just open the top of the coffeemaker, pull out the reservoir by its black handle, fill it up under the tap, and pop it back in! No water spills on my counter and all over the coffeemaker. It is dishwasher safe, so keeping it clean is a breeze. I also really liked the ease of removing the coffee filter holder. It is very easy to keep clean this way, and it just made the job of making the coffee so much easier. I love that I can program my coffeemaker to have my coffee ready for me in the morning. School days are so much easier when Mum”s had her first cup of coffee in the morning! The Automatic Shutoff is a safety feature that has come in handy a few times in our house. (He can shop for a coffeemaker, he just can”t seem to remember to turn it off!) Even though the Hamilton Beach Aroma Express 49284 does have accelerated brewing, sometimes its just not fast enough for me! That”s when the pause ‘n serve is a very welcome feature! No splish, no splash, just a cup of coffee when I need it instead of waiting for the pot to finish brewing!

You might have noticed that I wrote in the past tense for this review. That”s because my first Hamilton Beach Aroma Express coffeemaker didn”t last forever, but it did last for almost two years! In our house that”s a miracle! Guess what”s sitting on my counter now? Yep, a Hamilton Beach!
