This coffee maker was purchased with a store refund to replace a Cuisinart DTC-975 12-Cup Coffee Maker that was determined to erupt all over my counter and floor. We have been trying to find a good thermal carafe machine, and I am hoping we have found a keeper.

The machine is reasonably attractive, comes with a charcoal filter and a metal cone filter. Unlike the Cuisinart, this machine was designed so that the metal cone filters (#4 size) will fit without taking out power tools. This is a nice plus, for those who come from the french press background and don’t mind a little fine coffee dust at the bottom of their coffee. I take it as a good sign that this filter was included. Also nice to eliminate the waste of paper to buy and throw away (or compost) a filter with every pot of coffee. Of course, the machine also works great with paper filters, too. I have great well water and don’t use the charcoal filter, so I cannot attest to its benefits.

I’ve been using this machine for about a week now and there have been no problems. Instructions are clear. The clock and timer function and are easy to program, though I don’t much care for the ugly orange clock numbers - cheap looking. The carafe lid must be closed to brew, then opened to pour, but this is not complicated. The carafe pours in a straight stream with acceptable speed for me. The lid is not a bear to thread, as with some carafes. It is fairly easy to clean, and the filter holder removes for cleaning.

To the important stuff - the coffee produced is good in flavor and aroma. It seems to be a bit more efficient at extracting coffee from grounds than the Cuisinart, or perhaps it is just that I have yet to adjust the amount of coffee I use for the relatively smaller capacity of the Capresso. While I am not jumping up and down over the coffee it is producing, I am happy enough with it. The biggest drawback for us is the small capacity (about 4 medium-large sized mugs) and the fact that the carafe does NOT keep coffee hot for 4 hours. The Cuisinart had a much better thermal carafe for heat retention.

So, all in all, this looks like it is adequate. Coffee quality is a smidgeon better than with my backup machine (a DeLonghi I purchased at the thrift store for $3.99) and definitely better than the $100 Cuisinart it replaced. But, I can’t say for certain that it is even as good as my old Krups glass carafe machine’s coffee (which I then poured into an airpot to keep hot). I like robust coffee, and I am not sure this is the ticket. And some days I end up brewing a second pot for my mid- afternoon fix, due to its limited capacity. I will update this review if my experience with this machine changes.
