Crunchy coffee! Salton MEMB1B 10 Cup Coffee Maker Melitta MEMB1B Mill & Brew 10-CupCoffee Maker works well and is easy to clean but it does have some problems. You ...
I’ve had this Mill & Brew since about 2003 and it has been great. So much so, we’ve thought other coffee makers might be as good or better. Wrong! I appeased my wife with replacements (she initially preferred something in white to match some other kitchen appliances); everything from Black&Decker to DeLonghi. They were all horribly disappointing; particularly the leaky pump espresso machines. White coffee makers only look good if you never use them; make a pot and the coffee stains will instantly make them look like garbage.
I’ve always loved this Mill & Brew and now my wife agrees with me. We dusted it off, replaced the latch cover and finally ebay-ed a backup unit. Realized some time back that slamming the cover down would compromise the latch, so simply pushing it in has eliminated this problem (and a guy on ebay sells a metal latch modification). This product has such a following that Melitta actually brought it back into production(initally, it was planned to be retired under alternate brand names like Cook’s Essentials). Of course you’re going to lose a little water to steam; this complaint astounds me. If you don’t, you’re not really brewing coffee.
In general, a paper filter machine is going to make ‘cleaner’ coffee than a reusable filter model. Expect some real coffee residue in the bottom of the pot. Prior to my Melitta, I had the Braun classic design economy coffee maker. Braun eventually added a reusable filter to this model, and you could directly compare the results between the paper and foil elements. I, frankly, hate a product that you have to continue to support with more accessories and supplies. Some printers, electric shavers and Microsoft operating systems come to mind(I use linux on all my pcs; from my Athlon64s to my 10 year old PII Thinkpad). For coffee makers, it is usually annoying water and paper filters and some crappy frother nozzles that meet their fate in the garbage disposal. I’m not putting up with a coffee maker that requires more maintenance than my 14 year old BMW.
The Melitta Mill & Brew is one of those very few products I can honesty say is unparalleled in its design and efficiency in doing what it’s supposed to do - make great coffee. I believe that I paid about $40 at a Target for this thing years ago. There’s not a mill/grind & brew model that comes anywhere near that price. And with the savings, you can afford getting better coffee. And after hearing all the noise from high end manufacturers about why paying hundreds of dollars more for their machines will result in better coffee, forget it. If your water needs filtering for coffee, you probably should get it filtered at the house water supply; your problem isn’t just with your coffee. If coffee perfection is what you require, get a $15 French Press. We have one and it comes out occasionally to froth milk. For convenience AND good coffee, get the MEMB1B. Then you can focus on shopping for your signature coffee!
